Beginner-friendly class suitable for ages 10 to adult.
Cyanotype printing is a magical and accessible photographic process – one that’s perfect for beginners and seasoned artists alike. It’s wonderfully simple, requires no darkroom or fancy equipment, and produces rich, blue-toned prints that feel like tiny alchemical miracles. All you need is some sunlight, treated paper, and your imagination.
What is Cyanotype, you ask?
Cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic printing processes, dating back to the 1840s. It uses a light-sensitive solution that, when exposed to UV light (like sunlight), reacts to create beautiful Prussian blue images.
Originally used by botanists to document plant specimens, the process has evolved into a playful and expressive art form.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to coat your own paper with cyanotype chemicals, arrange objects or create transparencies to make your design, and expose your work in natural light. You’ll then rinse the paper in water to reveal your one-of-a-kind blueprints.
Cyanotypes are perfect for capturing delicate silhouettes – leaves, lace, feathers, or hand-drawn acetate designs. The results can be soft and ethereal or bold and graphic, depending on your style. Once you start printing, it’s hard to stop – it’s fast, satisfying, and every print is slightly different, which makes each one feel a little bit special.
Whether you're curious about alternative photography or just want to try something hands-on and creative, cyanotype printing is a great way to slow down, explore, and make art with light.
Kapila a print maker from Bangalore will be teaching this workshop, so you're in good hands.
