Product Description

July 5, Saturday (3 pm to 6 pm)

Beginner-friendly class suitable for ages 12 to adult.

Relief printing is a hugely satisfying and meditative art form – and one that is super easy to learn. It's entirely possible to print at home, without expensive and heavy presses. You can use this carve-able surface (Lino) to make printing blocks with, which you can make multiple prints, i.e. your very own custom stamp.

What is Linocut you ask?

Well, Linocut printmaking is a method of relief printing, which involves carving a drawing into a soft linoleum block, rolling a thin layer of ink over it, and pressing paper on top to transfer the image. We will help you to understand the process of removing the negative space on this rubber-like surface. It is quite literally the opposite of drawing, in that the untouched remains of the carved material are what will print to make the positive image. The areas where you have carved away often create quite beautiful results.

Linocut prints look bold and powerful, with hard lines, flat areas of colour, and high contrast between the paper and ink. You can spend a long time carving, or just make a simple design, but the printing is fairly fast, so multiple copies can be made quickly and easily. Many artists find that working in lino changes their style, and drawings that look tentative or flimsy in pencil take on a more confident, powerful quality when transformed into linocut prints.

What will you learn?

In this session of Linocut Printing, you will be introduced to the technique of Printmaking, you will be guided in the process of creating florals that you can use to create your own gift wrap or greeting cards, to take home as a finished project.

Who is teaching?

Kapila is an amazing print maker who has a studio in Bangalore. She's coming down to teach you the nuances of LINO and more. Join her for an excellent class.
