Madhubani has long fascinated young and old and is an ethnic stamp of Indian heritage in many ways. We will be doing this session using a dip pen, Indian inks and paper. Just like the old days. (No micron pen shortcuts here)
In the traditional wall paintings of Mithila, the act of drawing has always been separate from that of painting. An Outline was first drawn and colours were filled later. The whole tradition of painting in Mithila is called coloured drawings.
When paper was introduced as a surface for painting, many women artists painted fine drawings in red and black inks, simply because it was deeply rooted in tradition and the drawing was always to take center stage.
They’re wonderfully intricate with every stoke and line coming together to form a divine artwork.
The history of Madhubani is rich and varied and we will delve deeper into that during the class. What we will be painting is 'The Clove Tree' originally painted by Smt. Ganga Devi in 1989 and try to re-create the magic she once did. We will use 300 gsm paper with minimalist colours. Just black and red just like the old times.
All supplies required for the workshop will be provided.
